Problem
In Vietnam, stock trading was hard to get into if you were just starting out. Most platforms were built for seasoned investors, packed with technical charts, dense data, and complex interfaces. For beginners, it was easy to feel overwhelmed.
When I joined FiinGroup, a leader in financial analytics, they had a clear goal: create a trading platform that made investing simple, approachable, and trustworthy for first-time users.
Solution
I joined as the first designer to help bring FiinTrade to life. I worked with the Product Manager and Business Analysts. We started by interviewing new investors to understand where they were getting stuck. Most of them said the same thing: too much information, not enough guidance.
With that key insight, we focused the product on helping users ease in gradually. I designed FiinTrade so that information would build/show step by step, rather than all at once. A widget-based dashboard let users control what they saw, keeping things relevant and manageable. Real-time, verified data helped users feel confident in the numbers, and light and dark modes made sure charts and heatmaps were always easy to read.
Over six months, I designed more than 800 screens. I collaborated with Japanese advisors, local developers, and early users to test and refine the UX. When parts of the layout and data presentation still felt too heavy, I simplified them again. The goal was clarity at every step.
As the product grew, I moved from solo designer to Senior, then Lead, building FiinGroup’s first design team and setting up design principles and review systems as we scaled.
Impact
FiinTrade launched in July 2019. In the first week, 1,200 beta users signed up, many of which said it was the first trading app that they felt usable.
FiinTrade has always been special to me in my heart. It took me from game design into product design, and even leadership roles. It showed me seemingly endless possibilities when building tools that bring value to both users and the business.
